Spider-Men

The idea of climbing up walls or walking on the ceiling may conjure up images of “Spider-Man“, a well known fellow invented by popular-culture.

Although this species has not been disvovered yet in real life, there are in fact creatures which evolution granted the the capability to perform these exceptional tasks. One example are caterpilars. Spike Walker’s acclaimed image shows the physiological machinery mediating this process.  For me, it is a reminder of both the  functional as well as, for a human eye, asthetic principles nature employs.

From “Spider-Man”, nature is still a long way. But how knows – There are already accounts of men climbing up skyscrapers, such as Alan Robert, who climbed up the “Blue Cross Tower in Philadelphia. Yet, it is doubtful if evolution was at work in these cases.
